Job Capacity Assessment

What is a Job Capacity Assessement (JCA)?

A Job Capacity Assesssment is a way of finding out

*   if a person can work

*   how much work a person can do

*   how much help a person needs to find a job and do that job

You may need to have an assessment

*   if you have a disability or other medical problems with working

*   if you want help to find work

*   if you want to apply for some income support benefits

What Happens at the Assessment?

In most cases the assessment will involve a face-to-face discussion between you and your assessor in a private location. Your assessor will talk to you about any barriers you may have to finding and keeping a job. A friend, relative or advocate can attend the appointment with you and, if you prefer, you can ask for a male or female assessor to conduct the assessment. There is no set time period for completing the assessment but you should allow for one to two hours.

If required your assessment provider can arrange a qualified interpreter, including Auslan, to assist at your assessment. Please notify them in advance if this is will be needed or if you have other special requirements.

What should I take to the Assessment?

Please take all information relating to your disability and/or medical condition. If you have already provided a Treating Doctor's Report to Centrelink they will provide it to the assessor. It is not necessary to take X-rays and scans but reports on the results should be provided. For a comprehensive list of what should be taken please refer to the Job Capacity Assessment Fact Sheets available from the government website (click here) or ask at our office.

PLEASE NOTE: The above information is intended as a guide only - for detailed information please refer to Centrelink or visit the JCA website by clicking here
